Mahoney Signs with CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse quarterback Zack Mahoney has signed as a free agent with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL), the team announced on Friday.

An original walk-on from the College of DuPage (Ill.), Mahoney played three years for the Orange from 2015-17. He earned a scholarship prior to the start of 2016 and served as the team's backup quarterback the past two seasons.

In 25 career games (nine starts), Mahoney passed for 1,949 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for 242 yards and four scores.

Against Pittsburgh in 2016, Mahoney turned in one of the finest statistical performances in Syracuse football history. He completed 43-of-61 passes for 440 yards and matched the school record with five touchdown passes. He added two rushing touchdowns against the Panthers to finish with seven touchdowns responsible for, eclipsing the previous Syracuse record of six held by NFL legend Jim Brown.

Off the field, Mahoney was a leader in the Syracuse University and Central New York communities. He was the president of the Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes in 2017-18. He also served a term on the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

In 2016, Mahoney was presented with the ACC's Top Six for Service Award for his dedication to serving others and his commitment to community outreach programs. Last season, he was a finalist for the Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award and a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® and the Wuerffel Trophy.

Mahoney is the seventh member of the last year's Orange squad to latch on with a professional team. Linebacker Zaire Franklin was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Receivers Steve Ishmael (Indianapolis Colts.), Ervin Philips (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), offensive lineman Jamar McGloster (San Francisco 49ers) and Parris Bennett (Green Bay Packers) signed with NFL teams as free agents. Last week, defensive back Devin M. Butler signed a free-agent deal with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders.
