SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse sophomore pitcher Alexa Romero and junior outfielder Bryce Holmgren have been named to the 2018 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team. Romero earned first-team recognition and Holmgren was a second-team honoree.
Romero, who was named All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Second Team, finished the season with a 17-12 record and a 1.73 ERA in 169.2 innings pitched. She struck out 264 batters. Romero also tossed 14 complete games, with five shutouts.
Romero threw Syracuse softball's second-ever perfect game, and its first since 2000, in an 8-0, five-inning victory against Sacramento State on Feb. 17 in the Mary Nutter Classic. She also tossed a pair of no-hitters against Virginia Tech (March 9) and Virginia (March 16) to become the first pitcher in program history to throw three no-hitters in a single season.
A three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, in addition to being named the Fastpitch News NCAA Div. I Co-Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week, Romero set a career-high with 16 strikeouts in a victory over NC State. She recorded double-digit strikeout totals 12 times and struck out 10 or more in four of her last five mound starts.
Holmgren, a first team All-ACC pick, led the Orange in batting average (.413), hits (57), RBI (33), walks (25), hit-by-pitches (19) and tied for first with 12 doubles. Earlier this season, Holmgren set a program record after reaching base in 46 consecutive games, shattering the previous record by 14.
Holmgren recorded 15 multi-hit games in 2018, which included a four-hit performance versus Grand Canyon and three outings with three hits. She drove in multiple runs in 10 games, with a four-RBI game against Yale and two games with three RBI in each. Holmgren started in all 100 games during her time at Syracuse and is the program's all-time leader in career batting average (.382).
Holmgren was named the College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 27 after going 7-for-14 with three doubles, six RBI and three runs over a five-game stretch.
Each NFCA All-Region First Team was comprised of 13 players: three pitchers, a player for each infield position, three outfielders, one utility/pitcher and one designated player (DP) or utility/non-pitcher. The all-region second team had one less pitcher for a total of 12 players.
Coach Mike Bosch guided the Orange to a 30-20 overall record and a 9-12 mark in conference play. Syracuse earned a spot in the ACC Tournament, but were eliminated in a 2-1 loss to Louisville.
