A pair of 'Cuse sophomores earned spots on the USILA All-American teams after leading the Orange to a regular season title and the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Redshirt sophomore defender Nick Mellen and sophomore midfielder Jamie Trimboli were tabbed to the All-America teams, with Mellen earning third team and Trimboli garnering honorable mention honors.
Complete list of honorees
The award is the second All-America selection for Mellen this year, who was named to Inside Lacrosse's All-America team earlier this month, also earned All-ACC honors after his standout season. Drawing the top offensive player in each game, Mellen proved to be an elite cover defender. This season, he faced five of the top-11 scorers in the nation in seven contests (facing Cornell's Jeff Teat and Virginia's Michael Kraus twice each). His combined 15 opponents averaged 4.19 points per game in games in which they weren't facing Mellen, and 3.13 in games which Mellen was on the assignment. Coming off a year where he missed the duration of the 2017 season due to injury, the Syracuse, N.Y. native led the team with 22 caused turnovers and collected 31 ground balls.
Trimboli served as a veteran leader on the Orange's youngest unit, despite being just a sophomore. He led all Orange midfielders in goals (21), assists (10) and points (31), while starting all-15 games. He also collected 11 ground balls and caused a turnover. His most memorable moment once again came in conference play against Duke. A year after netting an overtime game-winner in his first-collegiate start against the Blue Devils, Trimboli collected a loose ball in front and again provided the eventual game winner in this year's meeting, to secure a crucial road win for SU.
Mellen and Trimboli will anchor 'Cuse team that returns nearly everyone from its 2018 roster, especially in their units. Mellen is set to once again be the top-cover defenseman in a unit that returns all of its starters on close defense and its top options at LSM and SSDM as well. Trimboli's midfield unit – which featured two true freshmen alongside him – will look to take another step forward in 2019 as well.
