Moore, Knight and Germano punch their tickets
Three more tickets were punched to Eugene on Saturday, bringing the Orange's total to seven – the second-most qualifiers in program history.
Justyn Knight won his heat in the 5000-meters, while Philo Germano got in on time after a strong close, to close the meet on Saturday night. Matt Moore had qualified in the 110-meter hurdles earlier in the day. The trip is Knight's fourth as he seeks his third individual national championship if the 2017-18 year, while Germano makes his second trip.
Germano ran in the first 5k heat, making a hard charge with five others over the final half mile, but ultimately wound up as the No. 6 finisher in the race, just outside the five automatic bids. Germano finished in 13:56.55.
Knight's heat ran significantly slower, finishing in 14:08.56, but he earned the win and automatic spot in Eugene. He used that patented Knight kick to pass Campbell's Lawrence Kipkoech in the final lap and maintain control in the home stretch.
Matt Moore took third in his heat, by running a time of 13.97 seconds from the outside lane. On a rain-soaked track at USF, Moore powered through the challenging elements to lock up his second berth to the NCAA Championships this season after finishing 10th in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
His qualification also means that the Orange have had a 110-meter hurdler in Eugene for six of the last-seven seasons and a hurdler (including the 100-meters) each year since 2012.
Saturday's trio joins Colin Bennie (10000-meters), Paige Stoner (3000-meter steeplechase), Noah Affolder (3000-meter steeplechase) and Aidan Tooker (3000-meter steeplechase) in already punching their tickets to Eugene.
Also in the 110-meter hurdles, Angelo Goss (14.42) took 21st overall, not qualifying for Eugene, but concluding his season as the ACC 110-meter hurdles Champion and a Second Team All-American at the 60-meter hurdles.
The seven qualifiers trails just the 2015 squad, which had eight participants.
