PHILADELPHIA – For the second year in a row, Orange quarterback Eric Dungey is a candidate for one of college football's most coveted awards.
Â
The senior was one of 41 quarterbacks named to the 85-player watch list for the 2018 Maxwell Award, released Monday, July 16 by the Maxwell Football Club. The award is named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell and has been presented to the nation's top player annually since 1937.
Â
In 2017, Dungey led the ACC in completions per game (25.0) and ranked second in the conference in total offense (343.3 ypg) and passing (277.2 ypg). In nine games, he completed 225-of-377 (59.3 pct.) passes for 2,495 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was also Syracuse's leading rusher with 595 yards and nine scores. Dungey was named to the Athlon Preseason All-ACC Third Team in May.
Â
The only active FBS quarterback with 6,000+ passing yards and 1,000+ rushing yards, Dungey holds or shares 12 Syracuse records. He ranks fourth in conference history in total offense yards per game (296.6). In addition, Dungey is the ACC active career leader in quarterback rushing yardage (1,239), touchdown passes (40), total offense (7,711 yards) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (20).
Â
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on Oct. 29, with the three finalists unveiled on Nov. 19. The winner will be announced on ESPN Dec. 6 as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
Â
Past Maxwell Award winners include Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson, who took home the trophy in 1987.
