NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Syracuse senior linebacker Kielan Whitner is a nominee for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. He was one of 169 nominees released by the American Football Coaches Association on Tuesday, July 17.
Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has brought together a select group of college football players from across the country to honor their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others. While players are often recognized for their accomplishments and achievements on game day, the 169 student-athletes nominated have made significant contributions to the greater good of society, inspiring future generations of young athletes and the larger college football community.
Whitner is the public relations director of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes, which is a nonprofit organization made up of a national network of chapters dedicated to inspiring the rare-disease community through the power of sport. In his role as one of the group's leaders, Whitner is helping organize the 2018 "Lift for Life," which will be held Friday, July 20 at Manley Field House. Last year's event raised more than $11,000 to benefit those affected by rare diseases.
In addition to his work with Uplifting Athletes, Whitner recently completed a mission trip to Haiti and is a member of Central New York Chapter of The For a Day Foundation, which provides therapeutic experiences for sick children. He is also Syracuse's player captain for Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams.
During his mission trip with Eternal Hope for Haiti in December 2017, Whitner helped lead a group of volunteers in the construction of two orphanages and the distribution of free medical care in severely impoverished areas of the country.
On the field, Whitner has played in 34 career games at safety and linebacker. He has 76 career tackles and four passes defended.
From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select the 2018 Good Works Team®.
Comprised of 11 FBS players, 11 players from the FCS, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, and one honorary head coach, the final roster of award recipients will be unveiled in September. Once the team members and honorary head coach are announced, fans are encouraged to visit the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® website on ESPN.com for the opportunity to vote for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Captain.
Since 2000, four Orange players have been selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, including 2014 honoree Sam Rodgers.
Syracuse kicks off the 2018 campaign Friday, Aug. 31 at Western Michigan. The Orange's first home game is Saturday, Sept. 8 versus Wagner.
Season and individual game tickets for Orange football are on sale now online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). Season tickets start at $125.
