AUGUSTA, Ga. – Syracuse redshirt junior Sterling Hofrichter is a member of the 2018 Ray Guy Award Watch List, released today by the Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate punter and is named after the legendary College and Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Â
A member of the All-ACC Preseason Football Team, Hofrichter was one of the 27 initial award candidates announced Wednesday, including 2017 finalist Mitch Wishnowski (Utah) and returning semifinalists Cody Grace (Arkansas State), Corey Fatony (Missouri) and Drue Chrisman (Ohio State).
Â
Hofrichter enters the 2018 season third on the Orange career record list with an average of 42.9 yards per punt. In 2017, he helped the Orange rank 10th nationally in net punting (41.3 avg.) and fourth in punt return yardage defense (2.67 avg.). Both marks led the ACC. Hofrichter punted 57 times for 2,462 yards (43.2 avg.) with just four touchbacks last season. Only nine of his punts were returned and 10 traveled at least 50 yards.
Â
The number of eligible candidates for the award will grow throughout the season. A complete list candidates will be released on Nov. 5, with the 10 Ray Guy Award semifinalists announced Nov. 15. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the three finalists to be announced on Nov. 20.
Â
After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select this year's award recipient. The winner will be announced live Dec. 6 during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.
