7/24/2018 2:00:00 PM | Football
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Syracuse redshirt junior punter Sterling Hofrichter was named to the 2018 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Football Team on Tuesday, July 24. Hofrichter received 33 votes in a poll of 148 media members who were credentialed for last week's ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.
Â
Hofrichter is the second player in school history to make the ACC's official preseason all-conference team. Offensive tackle Sean Hickey received preseason all-league honors from the media who cover the conference in 2014.
Â
A native of Valrico, Fla., Hofrichter enters the 2018 season third on the Orange career record list with an average of 42.9 yards per punt.
Â
In 2017, Hofrichter helped the Orange rank 10th nationally in net punting (41.3 avg.) and fourth in punt return yardage defense (2.67 avg.). Both marks led the ACC. Hofrichter punted 57 times for 2,462 yards (43.2 avg.) with just four touchbacks last season. Only nine of his punts were returned and 10 traveled at least 50 yards.
Â
Earlier this summer, Hofrichter earned All-ACC Preseason First Team honors from both Athlon and Phil Steele.
Â
Clemson led all schools Tuesday with eight preseason all-conference selections. Boston College running back AJ Dillon garnered 45 votes to earn ACC Preseason Player of the Year honors.
Â
Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey received one vote in the ACC Player of the Year balloting.
Â
The Orange begin preseason camp Aug. 2. The season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 31 at Western Michigan. Syracuse's first home game is Saturday, Sept. 8 versus Wagner.
