INDIANAPOLIS – Former Syracuse University safety Shamarko Thomas is headed to Indianapolis. Thomas signed with the Colts as an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday, July 25, the team announced.
Â
A fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2013 NFL Draft, Thomas spent the 2017 season with the Buffalo Bills, where he saw action in 13 games, including one playoff contest, and tied for the team lead with nine special teams tackles.
Â
Before his time in Buffalo, Thomas played in 51 games for the Steelers from 2013-16, including three playoff games. In 60 career regular-season games over five seasons, Thomas has 62 tackles (38 on special teams).
Â
At Syracuse, Thomas was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection as a senior in 2012. He ranks sixth on the Orange record list for most tackles by a defensive back (263) and led Syracuse with 88 stops as a senior.
Â
Thomas is one of three former Syracuse football standouts in Indianapolis, joining former Orange linebacker and seventh-round draft pick Zaire Franklin and wide receiver Steve Ishmael, who signed a free-agent contract with the team in April.
Â
The Colts reported for their first training camp under new head coach Frank Reich yesterday. Their first preseason game is Aug. 9 against Seattle.
