SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team is on the road for its second game of the season, traveling to Storrs, Conn. to face UConn at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19.
The Orange are coming off of a season-opening 1-0 loss against La Salle, suffered Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse opened the 2018 regular season with a tough-luck loss, falling 1-0 against La Salle.
The Explorers struck early, scoring the eventual game-winner six minutes into the match. La Salle's Madison Bowers corralled a loose ball at the top of Syracuse's penalty box before bending the ball around redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris and into the back left corner of the goal.
The Orange tallied six shots, including four in the second half. Junior defender Taylor Bennett led the team with two shots, and Harris had four saves.
WELCOME TO COLLEGE, WELCOME TO SYRACUSE
Freshmen defenders Abby Jonathan and Jenna Tivnan, freshman forward Meghan Root and sophomore midfielder Stephanie deLaforcade made their collegiate debuts Thursday night against La Salle. Jonathan, Tivnan and Root each started while deLaforcade, a transfer from Maryland, checked in as a substitute in the 16th minute.
Harris, a transfer from Arkansas, started in goal, making her first-ever appearance as a member of the Orange.
INTERNATIONAL ORANGE
Syracuse remains without junior midfielder Georgia Allen, who is representing her home country of England at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in the Brittany region of France.
England went 2-0-1 in group stage play, defeating North Korea and Mexico and settling for a draw against Brazil. The Young Lionesses advanced to the quarterfinals, where they beat the Netherlands, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals. England next plays Japan at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20
After making her first two appearances as a second-half substitute, Allen was in England's Starting XI for the match against the Netherlands, playing all 90 minutes.
Allen, originally from Suffolk, England, is a familiar face on the Young Lionesses squad, first competing for England in 2011 as part of the U15 team. Allen started 10 of Syracuse's 18 matches last season and led all Orange midfielders with four points.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
UConn enters Monday with a 0-1-0 overall record (0-0-0 The American), having lost its season-opening match at Northeastern, 1-0.
Monday night's match is the Huskies' home-opener, and the Orange will look to play spoilers and record their first win against UConn since 2012. Syracuse owns a 1-18-2 all-time record against UConn, earning a 1-1 draw in last season's match-up.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange's non-conference schedule next rolls on inside the friendly confines of SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse returns home to host St. John's at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23.
