SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse football took to the field for the first time since the spring, kicking off preseason camp with a nearly three-hour workout in shorts and helmets Thursday on the Schwartzwalder and Katz Practice Fields.
Thursday marked the first of 19 camp practice sessions before the team moves into preparation mode for the season opener at Western Michigan on Friday, Aug. 31.
While senior quarterback Eric Dungey practiced some in the spring, the Lake Oswego, Ore. product was full-go for the first time since injuring his foot last fall against Florida State, an ailment that sidelined him for the final three games of 2017.
"Today was really the first day I was at full speed out here, so it felt really good," Dungey said. "I'm glad to be back here with the guys. The linemen are looking really good, so I'm excited for the season to start up."
Having missed 10 games in his career because of injury, Dungey acknowledged his shortened freshman, sophomore and junior years, explaining how they've motivated him to take better care of himself physically and mentally between seasons.
"I did a lot in the offseason to really get my body right. "For the most part, you can't have that mindset of, 'What do I have to do to not get hurt?'" Dungey said. "Because then you're going to end up getting hurt. You've always got to play at full speed. When you go half speed, that's when injuries happen."
Dungey and his teammates went through several periods of individual and group drills, in addition to multiple team periods during the workout. Highlights of the team sessions included a long touchdown reception by redshirt freshman receiver Sharod Johnson, who hauled in a beautifully thrown pass in the corner of the end zone, and an interception by redshirt junior cornerback Christopher Fredrick on an underthrown ball.
#CampCuse continues tomorrow with another morning practice.
Following the opener at Western Michigan, the Orange play three consecutive home games, starting with Wagner on Saturday, Sept. 8. Season and individual game tickets are on sale now online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). Season tickets start at $125.
Notes: The Orange roster currently features 107 players ... Syracuse added six walk-ons to the program Thursday – WR James Cherry, WR Andrew Licciardi, DB John Sweetwood, LB Jake Wright, LB Terrell Bennett and OL Ryan Kisselstein ... Wright and Kisselstein are local products ... Wright attended Jamesville-DeWitt High School and Kisselstein is a Corcoran High School graduate ... Redshirt senior defensive tackle Chris Slayton earned the honor of breaking the team down to end practice
