#CampCuse: Week 1 Notebook
8/6/2018 8:48:00 AM | Football
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange completed is first week of preseason camp yesterday with a nearly three-hour workout on the Schwartzwalder and Katz Practice Fields. The practice marked the end of the NCAA's mandated four-day acclimation period and the team will put on full pads for the first time when it returns to the field Tuesday.
In addition, Syracuse received an unexpected treat at the end of Sunday's practice. More than 200 individually wrapped ice cream cones were handed out – courtesy of Dino Babers – to help the Orange beat the heat.
UNIT BREAKDOWNS
Throughout preseason camp, Cuse.com will analyze each position group heading into the 2018 season. So far we've examined the Syracuse quarterbacks and offensive line. This week we'll take a look at the Orange running backs, as well as the wide receivers and tight ends.
Position Previews: Quarterbacks | Offensive Line
SYRACUSE AMONG ACC LEADERS IN OFFENSIVE LINE STARTS
Speaking of the Orange offensive line, the unit ranks third in the ACC in most career starts. Syracuse's unit boasts 100 career starts, not including redshirt senior Koda Martin's first-string appearance at tight end when he was a sophomore at Texas A&M. Redshirt junior guard Evan Adams leads the group with 21 career starts (all consecutive).
Wake Forest's 131 offensive line starts tops the conference. Wisconsin's front line is the national leader with 151 combined starts.
Most Offensive Line Starts (ACC)
1. Wake Forest – 131
2. Boston College – 115
3. Syracuse – 100
4. Georgia Tech – 84
STRICKLAND THE PASS-CATCHER
Much has been made about replacing the production of record-setting receiving duo Steve Ishmael and Ervin Philips. But that responsibility does not have to rest with just the receiving corps.
Senior running back Dontae Strickland has proved to be a more than capable receiver over his first three seasons. Strickland has 48 career receptions, the most of any active ACC running back. In 2017, Strickland snagged 18 passes for a personal-best 142 yards (7.9 avg.) and two touchdowns.
The Dayton, N.J. native needs 11 more receptions to match Damien Rhodes (59) and Walter Reyes (59) for fifth on the school record list for most catches by a running back.
ACC Active Leaders – Pass Receptions (Running Backs)
1. Dontae Strickland, Syracuse – 48
2. Jacques Patrick, Florida State – 31
3. George Aston, Pittsbugh – 30
Clinton Lynch, Georgia Tech – 30
Jordan Brown, North Carolina – 30
