Double-Overtime Goal Sinks Orange in Loss Against Kent State

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder/forward Kate Hostage scored for the second consecutive match, but the Syracuse women's soccer team had no answer for Kent State's Isabelle Mihail, who scored twice and hit the game-winning goal in double overtime to topple the Orange, 2-1, Thursday night inside SU Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse's record moves to 3-5 overall with the loss.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Hostage and the Orange drew first blood with five minutes remaining in the first half. The native of Southborough, Mass., received a perfect through ball from redshirt freshman defender/midfielder Laurel Ness and then did the rest, striking the ball past Kent State's goalkeeper to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse maintained its one-goal lead through the majority of the second half until Mihail found the back of the net in the 80th minute. Mihail's late equalizer forced overtime, and she found a way to strike once again.
In the 104th minute, Mihail ripped a shot from the top of the box that hit the crossbar and rebounded directly into the goal, sealing the sudden-victory win for Kent State.
OF NOTE
Hostage's goal – her second in as many matches – was her team-leading fourth of the season. She also leads the squad in points with eight.
Junior forward Sydney Brackett led the team with four shots, three of which were on goal. Ness' assist was the first of her career.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris started the match and made four saves before giving way to sophomore goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx at the start of the second half. Proulx played the remaining 58 minutes and made eight saves.
HEAR IT FROM COACH WHEDDON
"I'm devastated by this loss. We challenged our team to come out with more effort and more intensity, and they did. That's a positive. We knew that Kent State was going to be a direct team. They were going to play balls forward and try to get in behind us, and they did. It's very disappointing to come away with a loss. We turned the ball over a lot, and it's just not acceptable."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange start the ACC portion of their 2018 schedule at home against Duke Sunday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Syracuse is 0-2-1 all-time against Duke and has lost the previous two meetings. The Orange and the Blue Devils battled to a 2-2 draw in the first-ever meeting (Sept. 22, 2013) between the two programs.
