SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team started the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its 2018 schedule Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium, coming up short against No. 13 Duke, 4-0.
Syracuse's record moves to 3-6 overall, 0-1 ACC with the setback.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The only goal Duke needed came in the 34th minute, when Taylor Racioppi received a pass from Marykate McGuire, broke through against the Orange defense and scored to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
Duke added another goal in the 40th minute to enter the half with a two-score advantage. Goals from Lily Nabet and Kayla McCoy in the 56th and 72nd minutes, respectively, helped extend Duke's lead to four.
OF NOTE
Sophomore goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx started in net and made a season-high eight saves.
Freshman defender Jenna Tivnan and junior midfielders Victoria Hill and Georgia Allen each had one shot. Only Allen's shot was on goal.
HEAR IT FROM COACH WHEDDON
"In the first 30 minutes, I felt quite comfortable with our performance, but right now, we're not athletically capable of sustaining it. We've got quite a few injuries, so it's a challenge to keep a consistent lineup. The team has the ability to hang with anyone. It's just some mental lapses at key times that undo us. There aren't team issues; it comes down to individual decision-making."
"We'll go to Boston College and give it our best effort. This team's resilient. They all believe in each other, and I believe in them. We've got better things to come."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange continue the ACC portion of their schedule on the road next week. Syracuse travels to Boston College 7 p.m. Thursday before playing at Louisville 1 p.m. Sunday.
