Orange Trio Receives Weekly ACC Football Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Syracuse linebacker Kielan Whitner, placekicker Andre Szmyt and quarterback Tommy DeVito were recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Monday, Sept. 17 for their performances in the Orange's 30-7 victory against Atlantic Division rival Florida State Saturday.

Whitner was named the league's Linebacker of the Week. The senior tallied a career-high 11 tackles and forced a fumble against the Seminoles. He led an Orange defense that held FSU to 240 total yards, forced 10 punts, sacked quarterback Deondre Francois four times, and harassed the Seminoles into a 1-of-14 (.071) performance on third down.

Szmyt was responsible for 12 of Syracuse's 30 points against the Seminoles and earned ACC Specialist of the Week honors. Szmyt hit a personal-best three field goals, connecting from 22, 19 and 23 yards out. He also made all three of his PATS.

For the season, Szmyt is 7-for-8 (.875) on field goals and a perfect 18-of-18 on extra-point tries. He leads the ACC in scoring and ranks sixth nationally at 13.0 points per game.

DeVito was voted ACC Rookie of the Week. The redshirt freshman led Syracuse to 24 second-half points in relief of injured starter Eric Dungey. DeVito completed 11-of-16 passes for a career-best 144 yards and threw is first career TD pass in the third quarter. DeVito also rushed for a 3-yard touchdown.

The Orange conclude a three-game homestand this week when they host former BIG EAST rival Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Carrier Dome. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on ESPNews.
