9/20/2018 12:00:00 PM | Football
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (3-0) conclude their three-game homestand Saturday, Sept. 22 when they host former BIG EAST rival Connecticut (1-2) inside the Carrier Dome. The game begins at 4 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPNews.
At halftime, Syracuse will retire the jersey of all-time rushing king Joe Morris. Morris' No. 47 jersey will be the fifth one retired in the history of the program. He joins Larry Csonka (39), John Mackey (88), Donovan McNabb (5) and Don McPherson (9) as former Syracuse standouts in that elite group. The No. 44, worn by 25 players, including legendary running backs Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little, is also retired and hangs from the Dome rafters.
During the second quarter, Syracuse will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the field hockey team's first NCAA semifinals appearance. Coached by Ange Bradley, the 2008 Orange posted a 22-2 overall record and became the first female Syracuse team to be ranked No. 1.
In addition to honoring Morris and the 2008 Orange field hockey squad, Saturday is Military Appreciation Day, presented by SEFCU. Several-military themed recognitions are planned and senior wide receiver Ben Brickman, who served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps before joining the Orange, will lead Syracuse onto the field carrying the American flag.Â
Highlights of what's happening around campus leading up to kickoff include pregame festivities on the Quad starting at 1 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., the "Pride of the Orange" marching band will perform on the steps of Hendricks Chapel before making their way to the Dome.
The band's pregame performance inside the Dome starts at 3:39 p.m. Those who have committed to serve in a branch of the military will take the Oath of Enlistment at 3:45 p.m., and Brickman along with Coach Dino Babers, lead the Orange onto the field at 3:56 p.m.
Two officers from the New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing – Col. Michael Smith and Chief Master Sgt. Michael Will – will serve as honorary game captains and accompany the Syracuse team captains to midfield for the coin toss at 4 p.m.
