Allen's Game-Winner in 83rd Minute Lifts Orange Past Northeastern
9/2/2018 3:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Junior midfielder Georgia Allen delivered the match-winning strike in the 83rd minute, burying the ball into the top right corner of the goal to carry the Syracuse's women's soccer team to a 1-0 win against Northeastern on Sunday afternoon. The Orange improve to 3-2-0 overall, 0-0-0 ACC with the win.
"Northeastern is a very good team, and they've proven it," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "As a team, we discussed what happened on Thursday and why we were lacking in certain areas. They understood that they didn't execute, so our biggest thing coming into today was to put in a more organized performance. I give our players great credit because they did that against a very, very good team. This was really a team win."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Junior forward Sydney Brackett found Allen all alone on the top of the box, and the Orange midfielder did the rest, one-timing a lob that snuck under the crossbar and into the top right corner of the goal.
Allen's goal in the 83rd minute proved to be the match-deciding score, as redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris and sophomore goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx combined to record Syracuse's second shutout of the season.
OF NOTE
It was a match of firsts for Allen, who was making her first start since rejoining the Orange after missing the first three contests while representing her home country of England at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup. Her goal, which was also her first of the season, came on her first shot of the season.
Harris and Proulx each played 45 minutes and combined for five saves in the Orange's second shutout win of the year. Harris started the match before giving way to Proulx, who played the entire second half and came up with a career-high three saves.
Brackett and sophomore midfielder/forward Mackenzie Vlachos were each credited with an assist on Allen's goal. Brackett now leads the team in both assists (two) and shots (10) this season, tallying two more shots in the match.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We felt pretty good about how we thought Northeastern was going to line up. We got the scouting right, having watched them the other night. We tried to get in behind some of their players at times. We looked for Sydney to get in behind them, and she was able to do that and create some great combination plays down our left-hand side."
"Georgia was free on the top of the box, and Sydney managed to find her. Georgia hit it into the top corner. It was a fantastic shot and a fantastic goal, but it really came from a great combination play, started by Syd's run."
UP NEXT
Syracuse is on the road again. The Orange will repack their travel bags and play at #5 Penn State 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 before facing Colgate at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.
