Orange Undone by No. 11 Penn State's First-Half Offensive Surge
9/6/2018 9:31:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Syracuse women's soccer team fell behind early and could not mount a comeback against No. 11 Penn State, suffering a 4-0 setback Thursday night at Jeffrey Field. The Orange's record sits at 3-3 overall, 0-0 ACC following the loss.
"Penn State's a highly ranked team that's very good in all areas of the field," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "I thought that we sat back against them, and because of their dynamic play they were able to punish us. We didn't really get any possession and get any type of rhythm until the second half, but by that time we were chasing in the game."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Penn State's Shea Moyer scored the match's first goal in the 24th minute before her teammate Kristin Schnurr tacked on the Nittany Lions' second goal of the first half in the 42nd minute.
Two second-half goals – scored in the 49th and then 56th minute – extended Penn State's lead to 4-0, and the Orange were unable to overcome the deficit.
OF NOTE
Syracuse tallied two shots in the match – both of which were on goal. Junior midfielder Victoria Hill had the Orange's first shot of the night, missing just high of the frame with her attempt, while junior forward Sydney Brackett recorded the team's second shot of the evening.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris started in goal and had three saves. Sophomore keeper Lysianne Proulx entered in the second half and made four saves.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We need to give it our all from minute one to minute 90 or minute 110 or whatever it takes. We didn't do that tonight. In the ACC, teams are punished repeatedly if they don't have a complete performance. We certainly learned that lesson tonight. Moving forward, we need to make sure every performance is a complete performance. That needs to start this Sunday [at Colgate]."
UP NEXT
The Orange's four-match road swing concludes at Colgate Sunday, Sept. 9, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Syracuse then returns to the friendly confines of SU Soccer Stadium at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, and plays Kent State in the final non-conference contest of the season.
The Orange host 'Doggy Day' that night and invite fans to bring their dogs to the stadium. For more information on the event, click here.
