Holland Sherrer, who won two NCAA Championships as a member of the Florida coaching staff, has joined Syracuse's track and field program as an assistant coach.
Sherrer will assist Dave Hegland in the recruiting and development the Orange sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers, which includes a men's hurdles unit that spent much of the 2018 season ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Event Rankings.
"We are thrilled to welcome Holland to our staff," Hegland said. "He comes to us having had terrific mentors at Florida, including hall of fame coach Mike Holloway, and will help in all aspects of our program. As a New Jersey native with strong ties to the Northeast, Coach Sherrer will immediately bolster our recruiting efforts in that area. We're excited for him to join the Orange."
At Florida, Sherrer served on a Gators' staff that won the men's 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship and 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship and also claimed a pair of runner-up finishes (2017 indoor; 2018 outdoor). In addition, the women's team placed fifth at both the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, and fourth at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship.
"I'm excited to start this new journey," Sherrer said. "I'm grateful to the Syracuse administration and coaching staff for this opportunity and thankful for the coaching staff at the University of Florida for a great two years. I'm looking forward to working with these talented student-athletes at Syracuse."
Sherrer, who assisted with the Gators' mid-distance runners and long sprinters, also helped Florida sweep the SEC outdoor titles in 2018.
He made an immediate impact with the Gators in his first year on staff, helping half-miler Andres Arroyo qualify for the 2017 IAAF World Championships. With Sherrer's guidance, Arroyo also won the 800 meters at SEC Indoor Championships, scored at NCAA Outdoor Championships (fifth place) for the first time in his career, and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for a fourth straight season. In 2018 under Sherrer's tutelage, the half-mile duo of Kyren Hollis and Justin Pacifico both set PRs, including Hollis' fourth-place finish at the SEC Championships.
An accomplished sprinter at Ole Miss, Sherrer twice competed at the USATF Championships in the 800-meters, including the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. He competed for the Rebels from 2014-16, earning USTFCCCA Outdoor All-America honors in the 800-meters as a senior after placing 12th at the NCAA Championships.
It was his second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, after qualifying in 2015. Sherrer also won an SEC title in the DMR at Ole Miss in 2015.
A native of Deerfield, N.J. Sherrer's collegiate career began at Rend Lake Community College, where he was a two-time NJCAA All-American and won an NJCAA Championship on the 4x800-meter relay team.
The Syracuse track and field program scored at both the NCAA men's and women's championships in both indoor and outdoor track last season, including a second-straight top-10 finish at the Men's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship.
