LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Syracuse junior wide receiver/kick returner Sean Riley was named to the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Sept. 24 for his performance in the Orange's 51-21 win against UConn. The honor roll recognizes college football players who demonstrate outstanding versatility each week.
Â
Riley racked up a career-high 290 all-purpose yards on 12 touches to help Syracuse defeat the Huskies. He caught six passes for a career-high 120 yards and a touchdown. He also ran back three punts for 110 yards, including a 69-yard return for a touchdown in the third quarter. In addition, Riley chipped in 11 yards rushing and 49 kickoff return yards.
Â
Both of Riley's touchdowns came in the second half, as Syracuse outscored UConn 20-7 in the last two quarters to pull away.
Â
Riley's punt return score was Syracuse's first since the 2015 season, and his 36.7 yards per punt return was the fourth-best, single-game average in school history. Riley's all-purpose yardage figure also ranks fourth on the Orange single-game record list. This century, the only Syracuse player with more all-purpose yards in a game than Riley is Johnnie Morant, who had 295 at North Carolina in 2003. Â
Â
For the season, Riley is second nationally in punt return average (30.4). He is Syracuse's second-leading receiver with 16 receptions for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
Â
The Paul Hornung Award is presented annually by the Louisville Sports Commission to the most versatile player in major college football.
Riley was one of five players recognized by the organization Monday. He was joined on this week's honor roll by Temple's Ryquell Armstead, Georgia's Mecole Hardman, Purdue's Rondale Moore and West Virginia's Marcus Simms.
Â
Riley and the Orange return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 when they visit Death Valley for a noon showdown with No. 3 Clemson.
