Queen Scores First Career Goal, Tar Heels Top Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse freshman Tess Queen scored her first career goal in a 5-1 loss on the road at No. 1 North Carolina Saturday afternoon in ACC field hockey action. The Orange move to 6-4 overall and stand at 0-3 in the ACC. Goalkeeper Borg van der Velde matched a career-high 11 saves on 21 UNC shots.
North Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Erin Matson scored on a deflection. The Tar Heels extended their lead to 2-0 just before halftime when Ashley Hoffman scored on a penalty stroke.
Syracuse was out-shot 8-0 in the first half but held a 1-0 advantage in penalty corners. Van der Velde made three of her eight saves in the first half.
After the break, Matson and Eva van't Hoog scored less than three minutes apart to extend North Carolina's lead to 4-0. Queen put the Orange on the board with her first career goal in the 54th minute when she redirected a shot from Sarah Luby in the midcircle.
Bryn Boylan added an insurance goal for North Carolina in the 64th minute when she took van der Velde one-on-one and snuck by the Orange keeper.
North Carolina outshot 'Cuse 21-2 and had a 3-1 advantage in corners in the second half. Queen and Weers recorded Syracuse's two shots while Queen recorded the only shot on goal for the Orange.
Top-ranked North Carolina improves to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC.
Syracuse returns to action Friday, Oct. 5 to host Boston College at 5 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
