WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior Guzal Yusupova captured two titles for the Syracuse women's tennis team at the West Point Invitational this weekend, winning the A-flight singles bracket and pairing up with senior Dina Hegab to win the A-flight doubles draw.
"It was another great weekend for the team," associate head coach Shelley George said. "We took another step forward, sending four student-athletes to the semifinals. Guzal had an exceptional weekend winning A-flight singles and doubles with Dina."
HOW IT UNFOLDED
Playing in the top singles flight, Yusupova earned her first win of the tournament Friday, claiming a straight-set 8-2 victory in the opening round to advance. She picked up two more straight-set singles win in day two – 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2 – to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
In Sunday's semfinals, Yusupova won 6-2, 6-4 – her fourth straight-set single triumph of the weekend – to earn a spot in the finals.
Up against Fordham's Arina Taluyenko, Yusupova dropped the first set, 4-6, before digging her heels in to win the final two sets by the score of 6-2, 10-4. Her three-set victory clinched the A-flight singles title.
The Orange saw even more success in doubles action. One title was not enough for Yusupova, as she then teamed up with Hegab to win the A-flight doubles draw.
The pair opened their weekend with 6-1 and 6-4 wins to earn the right to continue their bid for the doubles title Saturday. In day two, they punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 6-4 victory before pulling out a 7-5 win for a spot in the finals.
Going head-to-head against Stony Brook's duo of Jamie Wei and Nolwenn Cardoso, Yusupova and Hegab cruised to a 6-0 win, giving them the A-flight doubles title.
AROUND THE COURTS
Hegab, freshman Sofya Treshcheva and senior Libi Mesh each advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles draws, as well.
Treshcheva played in the A-flight alongside Yusupova and advanced to the semifinals, winning all her matches in straight sets. She lost 1-6, 7-5, 5-10 in the semifinals, spoiling her shot at the title and an opportunity to square off against her teammate in the finals.
Hegab and Mesh played in the B-flight, where they each advanced to the semifinals before both losing in three-set matches. Senior Maria Tritou also played in the B-flight, winning once before suffering defeat in the second round.
In A-flight doubles, Treshcheva and Tritou won twice to advance to the semifinals. There, the Orange duo lost 5-7.
Mesh, meanwhile, teamed up with a competitor from St. John's in B-flight doubles and was eliminated in the second round.
OUT IN CALIFORNIA
Junior Miranda Ramirez and sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya were in action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships' pre-qualifying draw this weekend, as well.
Ramirez won her first-round match-up against Boise State's Wilhelmina Palmer by the score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 before losing to Oklahoma State's Katarina Stresnakova 4-6, 7-5. Golubovskaya suffered a first-round exit, losing 4-6, 1-6 to USC's Salma Ewing.
