SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team wraps up its four-match road swing Sunday, Sept. 9 in Central New York against Colgate. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse fell behind early and could not mount a comeback against No. 11 Penn State, suffering a 4-0 setback Thursday night in University Park, Pa., at Jeffrey Field.
Penn State's Shea Moyer scored the match's first goal in the 24th minute before Kristin Schnurr tacked on the Nittany Lion's second goal of the first half in the 42nd minute. Two second-half goals – scored in the 49th and then 56th minute – extended Penn State's lead to 4-0, and the Orange were unable to overcome the deficit.
BRONZE LOOKS GOOD ON ORANGE
Junior midfielder Georgia Allen scored the match-winning goal in penalties to help England beat France and claim a bronze medal at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup this summer.
Allen was away from the Orange and missed the team's first three matches this year while she was representing her home country of England at the U20 World Cup in France. England went 2-0-1 in group stage play, defeating North Korea and Mexico and settling for a draw against Brazil. The Young Lionesses advanced to the quarterfinals, where they beat the Netherlands, 2-1. England lost 2-0 vs. Japan in the semifinals, ending its run for the World Cup title and setting up its date with France in the third-place match. Allen was in England's Starting XI for the match against the Netherlands, playing all 90 minutes.
Allen, originally from Suffolk, England, is a familiar face on the Young Lionesses squad, first competing for England in 2011 as part of the U15 team. Allen, who started 10 of the Orange's 18 matches last season and led the midfielders with four points, played 33 minutes in her 2018 season debut Thursday Aug. 30, at Harvard.
Allen made her first start of the year at Northeastern and scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
THE BOUNCEBACK KIDS
The Orange have proved to be a resilient bunch this season. Coming off of losses this year, the Orange are a perfect 2-0.
After a season-opening loss against La Salle, Syracuse came back with a win in its second match of the year, defeating UConn on the road at UConn. In the first of this current four-match road swing, the Orange suffered a 4-0 setback at Harvard, but followed it up with a 1-0 win at Northeastern.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate enters the match with a 1-2-2 overall record, following a 1-1 draw with Yale in overtime Monday. Ellis Miller, assisted by Leah Lewis, tied the game in the 70th minute. The goal was Miller's second goal of the season.
Syracuse holds a 15-4-2 all-time record against Colgate dating back to 1996.
HEAR IT FROM COACH WHEDDON
"It's a local rivalry, and both teams are going to want to win. We're playing at Colgate, which will be a hostile environment, and we know that. We have to be clean on the ball, and we've got to be able to move the ball quickly. Our focus is purely on trying to play the way we know we can play."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange return home to play Kent State at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the final non-conference contest of the season.
