SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Sondre Norheim scored his first goal of the season in the 84th minute to bring Syracuse within one, but the Orange couldn't record the equalizer as No. 12 Notre Dame held on for a 3-2 victory on Friday night. The match was played in front of a season-high crowd of 1,908.
Â
"In order to be good at this level, you have to leave it all out there emotionally, physically and our guys did that," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We knew some of the threats they were going to bring and they exposed us and exploited us on those. But overall, I think we were pretty good. I'm disappointed we didn't get anything (points) from this game."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange (2-2, 0-1) were the more dangerous team in the first half. Syracuse recorded six shots, three of which were on frame, and had four corner kicks but couldn't take advantage of its chances as the teams were tied 0-0 at halftime.
Â
Despite the Orange having the majority of possessions, it was Notre Dame (3-0-1, 1-0) that struck first as Patrick Berneski scored his team-high fourth goal of the year off a corner kick by Felicien Dumas. Thomas Ueland added a goal in the 59th minute to extend the Fighting Irish's lead to 2-0.
Â
Junior Massimo Ferrin scored his first goal as a member of the Orange in the 66th minute when he converted a penalty kick to bring Syracuse within one. However, Dumas answered in the 76th minute when he placed his free kick from 30 yards out perfectly over an outstretched Hendrik Hilpert to again give Notre Dame a two-goal advantage.
Â
Norheim scored his first career goal in the 84th minute as his shot from the right side hit off the crossbar and into the back of the net to again cut the Orange's deficit to one. Syracuse continued to send numbers forward and had a chance to tie the game in the 89th minute, but John-Austin Ricks' shot went high and Notre Dame ran out the clock for the win in the ACC opener for both teams.
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse outshot Notre Dame, 16-8, and had nine corner kicks to one for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame came into the match having allowed just one goal this season and posted back-to-back shutouts last weekend against top 25 teams.

Syracuse goes on the road for its next two contests, starting Monday, Sept. 10 at Cornell at 7 p.m.
