ORANGE UPDATE
Syracuse had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 73-59 setback to Georgia Tech in the Carrier Dome on Saturday. It was the Orange's first loss in ACC play after winning their first two conference games of the year. Syracuse enters Monday's game with an 11-5 overall record.
Â
The Orange trailed by one at halftime, 27-26, but the Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 24-7 scoring run to take a commanding lead. Syracuse fought back and cut the deficit to eight, but that was as close as it could get.
Â
Sophomore Oshael Brissett scored all of his team-high 15 points in the second half to lead a group of three Orange to score in double figures. Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes added 12 points, while junior Tyus Battle had 11.
Â
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke needed a last-second 3-pointer to defeat Florida State, 80-78, on Saturday in Tallahassee. The top-ranked Blue Devils extended their winning streak to nine and improved their record to 14-1 overall, 3-0 in ACC play.
Â
A trio of freshman leads the Duke offense. R.J. Barrett averages 23.4 points per game, while Zion Williamson is scoring 20.3 points per contest. In addition, Cam Reddish also averages double figures in scoring (13.3 ppg.). Williamson leads the squad in rebounding (9.4 rpg.) and steals (31).
Â
Head coach Mike Krzyzewski is in his 39th season at Duke. The Naismith Hall of Fame member has guided the Blue Devils to five national championships and 12 Final Four appearances.
Â
THE SERIES
Duke leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 7-5. The squads met twice last season. The Blue Devils defeated the Orange, 60-44, in Durham in February.
Â
The second meeting took place in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in Omaha. Syracuse trailed by nine, 62-53, with 4:14 remaining but made one last run. A tip in by Marek Dolezaj brought Syracuse within three, 67-64, with 13 seconds to play. A Duke miss on the front end of a 1-and-1 gave the Orange possession with 12 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils fouled Battle to prevent a game-tying 3-point attempt. He made one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 67-65, but Gary Trent Jr. sealed the victory for Duke with a pair of free throws with six seconds to go.a
