Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon has announced that the county has been selected to be a Regional site for The Basketball Tournament (TBT), a $2 million, winner-take all summer event. The Basketball Tournament games will be played July 26-28, 2019 at Onondaga Community College's SRC Arena on campus.
Â
Â
The Basketball Tournament features a 64-team bracket that will be contested at eight Regional sites starting July 19. The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game will be played in Chicago, from Aug. 1-6.
Â
Â
Boeheim's Army, an experienced The Basketball Tournament squad comprised primarily of former Syracuse University players, will serve as the host team in the local Regional. Ryan Blackwell, who was a three-year starter at Syracuse and is the men's basketball coach at Liverpool High School, will coach Boeheim's Army again this year.
Â
Â
"Syracuse is a basketball city and we are honored to be chosen as a host site for The Basketball Tournament" said Onondaga Community College President Dr. Casey Crabill. "The SRC Arena has established itself as one of the region's premier facilities for intercollegiate and scholastic athletic competitions, graduation ceremonies, trade shows and countless community-focused events. We look forward to welcoming teams and fans into our air conditioned arena to watch hotly contested basketball which has become a hallmark of The Basketball Tournament."Â
Â
Â
"The Basketball Tournament has been a wonderful experience for our fans and former players," noted Jim Boeheim, Syracuse men's basketball coach. "It's something I look forward to every year and support 100 percent! Bringing the Regionals here will be tremendous for all -- our community, players and fans! It will be great to see all our loyal fans coming out to support our guys!"Â

Along with The Basketball Tournament host hotel, a variety of area hotels will house the participating teams. Those teams and their fans will generate a baseline of upwards to a quarter of a million dollars of economic impact upon the community. As the tournament progresses and the Syracuse regional site teams are determined, the strong fan base that this event traditionally attracts could see that impact rise significantly.
Â
Â
Add to that the media landscape, and the overall impact is enormous. The Basketball Tournament was built from the ground up through social media and now boasts a 360-degree media platform inclusive of mobile, digital, and national TV and has solidified itself as a fixture of the summer sports scene.
