SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Syracuse plays its first game of the new year at Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 5. The ACC opener for the Orange tips off at 12 p.m.

ORANGE UPDATE
Syracuse closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 81-48 victory against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 29 in the Carrier Dome. The Orange enter ACC action with a 9-4 record.

Junior Tyus Battle was 8-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line for a team-high 21 points against the Bonnies. He was named ACC Player of the Week for his performance, marking the second time this season he has earned the award. Battle continues to lead Syracuse in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game.

'CUSE IN ACC OPENERS
The Orange are 3-2 in their conference openers since joining the ACC prior to the 2013-14 season. Syracuse has opened league play on the road in three out of the last five years, posting a 1-2 record in those games. Last season, the Orange defeated Virginia Tech, 68-56, in the Carrier Dome in their first ACC game of the season.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame lost its ACC opener, 81-66, at Virginia Tech on New Year's Day. The loss snapped the Fighting Irish's four-game winning streak, giving Notre Dame a 10-4 record, which includes a 9-1 mark on its home court.

Junior T.J. Gibbs leads Notre Dame in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game. He ranks second in the ACC in assists/turnover ratio (3.31). Junior John Mooney also averages double figures in scoring (12.6 ppg.) and leads the squad on the boards, pulling down 9.4 rebounds per game. In addition, junior Juwan Durham leads in the ACC in blocked shots per game (3.31).

Head coach Mike Brey is in his 20th season at the helm of the Notre Dame program. He is the school's all-time winningest coach.

THE SERIES
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Notre Dame, 28-21. The Fighting Irish have won the last two meetings, snapping Syracuse's four-game winning streak in the series. Last season, Notre Dame visited the Carrier Dome and Rex Pflueger's layup after an offensive rebound with two seconds remaining gave the Fighting Irish a 51-49 victory. Battle scored 21 points to lead all scorers.
