SAN JOSE, Calif. – Redshirt freshman placekicker Andre Szmyt and true freshman safety Andre Cisco were voted to the 18th annual Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team on Monday, Jan. 7.
Â
The 32-player team was selected by a 13-person panel of nationally-prominent college football experts representing each FBS conference, along with independents, and released this morning at the FWAA Awards Breakfast.
Â
Syracuse, Georgia (3) and top-ranked Alabama (2) were the only schools with multiple honorees.
Â
The 2018 Lou Groza Award winner and a unanimous All-American, Szmyt led the nation in field goals made (30), field goals attempted (34), field goals per game (2.31), and points per game (11.6). His 151 points this season are a Syracuse record and the third-most ever by a kicker in FBS history.
Szmyt was 23-for-24 from inside 40 yards and 3-for-3 from beyond 50 yards. He also set the school single-season record with 61 extra points.
Â
The ACC's Defensive Rookie of the Year, Cisco earned second-team All-America honors from both Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. He tied for the national lead with seven interceptions and set a Syracuse true-freshman record with 18 passes defended. Cisco's 60 tackles (46 solo) were fourth on the team. He also forced a fumble.
Â
Syracuse went 10-3 in 2018 to post the seventh double-digit win season in school history and first since 2001. The Orange won six of their final seven games, including a 34-18 triumph over West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.
Â
The Orange open the 2019 campaign on Aug. 31 at Liberty. Syracuse will also face Maryland (Sept. 7), Western Michigan (Sept. 21) and Holy Cross (Sept. 28) next season in non-conference action. The ACC portion of the 2019 schedule is expected to be released later this month.
Â
New season ticket orders and renewals for 2019 Orange football are currently being accepted. Tickets for next season's six-game home slate start at $100 for Syracuse University Young Alumni (Class of 2015 to Class of 2019 graduates) and $125 for the general public. They may be purchased online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
Â
The deadline to renew current season tickets is March 8.
