SYRACUSE, NY. — Syracuse ended a frigid night in October with some fiery celebrations thanks to sophomore Meghan Root's late-game heroics at SU Soccer Stadium. Root netted two goals against visiting Wake Forest to lift the Orange past the Demon Deacons and give first-year head coach Nicky Adams her first Atlantic Coast Conference victory.
Syracuse (3-7-2, 1-3-1 ACC) trailed the Demon Deacons (5-5-3, 0-3-2), 1-0 heading into the final minutes of regulation when Root hit an 83rd minute zinger to tie things up. Root then became the hero of the night eight minutes into extra time when she trapped a rebound two feet in front of the goal mouth and tapped it in for the win.
"This win is huge for our team," Root said. "It's been frustrating because we've put in a lot of work and it hasn't always been reflected on the field or shown in the result, so to finally put together a full game where we have pride in the defense but then get forward and are being dangerous feels amazing. It hasn't happened in a while so I'm just so proud and happy for everyone."
"What a gutsy performance from my team from start to finish," Adams said. "I thought we were really trying to execute the game plan. At halftime we talked about courage, guts, and what we're playing for today, and I couldn't be more proud of what this team put forth."
How it happened
After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest capitalized on a low free-kick opportunity early in the second to go up 1-0. The Orange continued to battle and avoided giving up opposing scoring opportunities while almost capitalizing on a few chances themselves.
It wasn't until there were seven minutes left in regulation that the Orange finally evened the score. Root netted her first goal of the season off a corner where she found space near the top of the box and sent the ball toward the far post, much to the excitement of the Syracuse sideline and fans. After an action-packed final few minutes, the Orange and Demon Deacons headed to overtime knotted at 1-1.
Root once again came up big for the Orange just eight minutes into extra time. She netted her second of the night following a shot from junior Clarke Brown that was blocked and rolled into open space in front of the six yard box. A gentle toe poke was all Syracuse then needed to get its first conference victory of the season.
