SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Sophomore Meghan Root scored her third goal of the week and kept a crowd of 438 on the edge of their seats in Syracuse's 2-1 loss to Miami Sunday afternoon. The Orange (3-8-2, 1-4-1 ACC) took the Hurricanes (4-6-2, 1-4-1 ACC) to the wire at SU Soccer Stadium, but a late goal helped Miami take the game. Syracuse's next game is Saturday, Oct. 19 at No. 9 Clemson. The Orange will play two additional road contests before returning to Syracuse on Oct. 31 to host No. 1 Virginia and celebrate senior day in the final match of the regular season.
"There were two teams looking for wins and I thought in the second half that Miami wanted it a bit more than we did," head coach Nicky Adams said. "That's the disappointing part, we let ourselves down technically. We defended really well and then we kept giving the ball right back instead of knocking it around and forcing Miami to defend. We'll take two solid days off and recuperate, have a couple film sessions on areas that we need to improve, and go from there."
How it happened
The Hurricanes jumped on the board at the 9:27 mark of the first half, capitalizing on a right-corner cross that was tapped in by Tia Dupont for her third of the season.
Root tied things up just 43 seconds later with a left-foot rip from the top of the 18-yard box that curled into the right upper 90, the goal making her the Orange's leading goal scorer on the year. Root would continue to open up scoring chances and put shots on frame, but the Hurricanes' Tyler Speaks dealt away the danger.
Miami's game-winner came in the final 10 minutes of regulation off a series of rebounded shots. It started when Kristina Fisher sent a low shot in that 'Cuse junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx saved. The deflected ball then bounced toward Michelle Giamportone who took a rip, the shot ricocheting off the crossbar before finally falling toward Bayleigh Chaviers who scored on an uncontested goal-line header.
