Orange Take Care of Virginia, Sweep 3-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse volleyball (5-8, 2-4 ACC) cruised to a three set victory Sunday over Virginia (9-10, 1-5 ACC), snapping a three match losing skid. 'Cuse won by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-17 to secure its second Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) victory of the season, and first victory on its home court. Polina Shemanova paced the Orange in kills (19) and digs (16) while tying Kendra Lukacs for the team-lead in aces (2). Elena Karakasi lead the Orange in assists (33).

HOW IT HAPPENED
A service ace from Ella Saada and three kills from Shemanova helped the Orange jump out to a 10-7 lead early in the first set. Shemanova's second kill was her 200th of the season and her total climbed to 217 by the end of the match, giving her an average of 16.7 kills per count on the season. After a Virginia timeout, Shemanova's success continued as the St. Petersburg native tacking on another three kills to extend the Orange advantage to 18-12. With the score 24-16, Shemanova slammed her seventh kill to secure the set for Syracuse. Abby Casiano contributed three kills while Saada secured two of her own to fuel the Orange attack.
The second stanza was tightly contested, with the teams even at 11. But the Orange would put together a 10-4 run with Saada recording six kills on the Cavaliers in the second set. At 24-15, Shemanova struck again, logging her eleventh kill of the match to clinch the set for the 'Cuse.
Shemanova headlined the Orange offense again in the third frame, with kills from the 'Cuse captain accounting for three of the Orange's first four points in the set. After a Virginia timeout with the score 10-5, the Orange stayed in control with three kills from Shemanova, two kills from Saada and a service ace from Elena Karakasi. On its fourth match point, a Yuliia Yastrub kill secured the triumph for Syracuse.
