RALEIGH, N.C. — The first-career goals for redshirt sophomore Kailee Coonan and redshirt freshman Marisa Fischetti weren't enough to get Syracuse women's soccer (3-10-2, 1-6-1 ACC) past NC State (7-5-4, 2-2-4 ACC) Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C. as the Orange lost, 3-2, in overtime. Syracuse is back in action Sunday when it takes on Duke.
Â
"We fought for 90-plus minutes tonight," head coach Nicky Adams said. "I'm proud of the team's effort and guts. NC State is an incredibly athletic team and put us under pressure from start to finish. I thought our players stepped up and handled the pressure well."
Â
How it happened
The Orange opened scoring 11 minutes into the game when Coonan settled a feed from junior Shannon Aviza in the right half of the 18-yard box. Coonan then took a quick touch and shot it right post to put Syracuse up 1-0.
Â
NC State then responded twice before halftime. Kristina Schuster scored the 1-1 equalizer in the 33rd minute when she sent a laser in from the top of the box that flew under the crossbar. The Wolfpack took a 2-1 lead eight minutes later when Tziarra King crashed the net on a low free kick and slotted it to the left post.
Â
Syracuse leveled the score 17 minutes into the second half thanks to Fischetti, who settled a rebounded shot from sophomore Meghan Root two feet in front of the goal mouth before backheeling it in, making things 2-2. The Wolfpack had a chance to take the 3-2 lead three minutes later when they were awarded a penalty kick after sophomore Jenna Tivnan took down an attacker, but junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx came up big for her team and calmly caught the chance.
Â
The Orange almost closed out the game in the final 10 seconds of regulation when freshman Alexandra Panaggio sent in a cross to the wide open Teri Jackson, but the freshman couldn't settle the pass and missed the scoring opportunity, sending the match to overtime. NC State's Kia Rankin scored the game winner two minutes into extra time off a bender from the left goal line that curled around Proulx and nestled into the back right corner.
