SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (3-4, 0-3 ACC) looks to snap a two-game losing skid and pick up its first conference win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Florida State (3-4, 2-3 ACC). Kickoff between the Orange and Seminoles is set for 3:30 p.m.
The Orange are coming off consecutive weekday losses to NC State (16-10) and Pitt (27-20). The Seminoles have also lost their last two – both away from home. FSU fell at Clemson (45-14) on Oct. 12 and at Wake Forest (22-20) on Oct. 19.
Saturday's game will air live nationally on ESPN2. Syracuse alum Beth Mowins (pxp), Anthony Becht (booth analyst) and Rocky Boiman (field analyst) have the call.
This is Syracuse's sixth trip to Tallahassee. The Orange are looking for their first win at Doak Campbell Stadium.
HACKETT TO THE HOUSE
Junior tight end Aaron Hackett has four touchdown catches this season, second on the team behind Trishton Jackson (6). Hackett totaled one TD in 21 games played coming into 2019.
Since Nick Provo led the Orange in touchdown receptions (7) in 2011, there have been 18 touchdowns caught by Orange tight ends. Fourteen have come since the start of the 2017 season, including seven by Ravian Pierce during the 2017 and 2018 campaigns. Hackett's two-TD game versus Western Michigan on Sept. 21 was the third by an SU tight end since 2011.
ORANGE DIG THE LONG BALL
A good portion of Syracuse's scoring this season has come by virtue of big plays in the passing game. Redshirt senior quarterback Clayton Welch's 94-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Taj Harris last week against Pitt tied for the second-longest passing play in team history and represents the longest pass in the ACC so far in 2019.
Nearly half (6 out of 13) of Syracuse's passing touchdowns have been 40+ yards, and four have covered more than 50 yards. The average length of the Orange's receiving touchdowns is 34.5 yards. Harris, freshman tight end Luke Benson, and redshirt junior wide receiver Trishton Jackson have been the recipients of Syracuse's long-distance passing scores.
Including rushing touchdowns, nine of Syracuse's 20 total offensive touchdowns this season have been from outside the red zone.
TAKEAWAY STREAK CONTINUES
Syracuse recovered a fumble against Pitt on Oct. 18 to extend their number of consecutive games with a takeaway to 21. Coupled with Mississippi State's failure to gain a turnover against LSU, the Orange now have the longest active takeaway streak in the nation. The Bulldogs had previously logged a takeaway in 22 straight outings.
The Orange's takeaway streak dates back to the 2017 finale versus Boston College. That day, Syracuse recovered an Eagles' fumble to ignite the run.
In all, Syracuse has gained 46 turnovers (21 fumble recoveries, 25 INTs) during the streak, an average of 2.2 per contest. Twenty different players have at least one turnover gained during the streak.
A year after tying Ohio for the FBS lead with 31 turnovers gained, the Orange are among the national leaders in that category again in 2019. With 14 takeaways in seven games, Syracuse is tied for 13th. Cincinnati (19) leads all of FBS football, while Syracuse's 14 takeaways is second in the ACC behind Clemson (15).
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES
Florida State enters Saturday's game off back-to-back road losses at Clemson and Wake Forest. All three of the Seminoles' wins in 2019 have come at home.
Florida State is led by head coach coach Willie Taggart, who is in his second season as head coach of the Seminoles. Taggart is 8-11 at the FSU helm and 55-61 in his career as a head coach, which includes stops at Western Kentucky, USF and Oregon.Â
Running back Cam Akers is one of the top players in the ACC. The junior ranks 11th nationally in rushing yards per game (110.4), is third in the ACC in rushing yards (773), and leads the conference in total touchdowns (11).
Redshirt senior Alex Hornibrook and redshirt sophomore James Blackman have split time at quarterback, with Blackman playing exclusively last week at Wake Forest. It was the first time the two hadn't shared duties since Sept. 14 at Virginia. Both quarterbacks have been accurate, combining for a 66.2 percent completion rate, a mark that ranks 22nd nationally and first in the ACC.
Defensively, the 'Noles have been susceptible to big plays through the air. They are last in the ACC in passing defense, allowing 293 yards a game.
SERIES HISTORY
The Seminoles hold the series advantage with a 10-2 record in the 12 prior pairings, including a 5-0 mark at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Syracuse's two wins bookend the series. The Orange won the initial meeting between the two programs in 1966, using a 37-21 victory over the Seminoles at Archbold Stadium to go from unranked to No. 17 in the following week's UPI poll. Syracuse legend Floyd Little ran for an SU series-best 193 yards and three touchdowns. Last season, Syracuse snapped what was a 10-game series losing streak with a 30-7 win in the Dome.
UP NEXT
The Orange return home next week to take on longtime rival Boston College on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the Dome. Kickoff between the Orange and the Eagles is slated for noon on the ACC Network.
Tickets for the Boston College game start at $35. They are on sale now online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Dome Box Office located in the Ensley Athletic Center.Â
