Syracuse University student-athletes Shannon Aviza (women's soccer) and Andrew Cummings (men's rowing) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 7.
Â
Aviza, a junior from Medway, Mass., is a dual major in the School of Information Studies and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. In four semesters at Syracuse, she has earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each semester and has been on the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Academic Honor Roll in each of her first two years. Aviza has been a constant for the Orange in the defensive line, and scored a goal in a 3-0 win against Siena earlier this season.
Â
Cummings, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., is majoring in applied mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and has made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in five of his six semesters on campus. He earned Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) All-Academic Team honors in 2018 and 2019. Cummings was voted recipient of the David Godfrey award by his teammates for exemplifying what it means to be a Syracuse oarsman and voted co-captain for the 2019-2020 campaign. Last season, he rowed 3-seat in the 1V for victories over Wisconsin, Cornell and Navy, helping the Orange bring home the Goes Trophy for the first time since 2011.
Â
This is the first Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors for both Aviza and Cummings.
Â
Aviza and the Syracuse women's soccer team host a pair of ACC contests this week, first against Wake Forest on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon date with Miami at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at SU Soccer Stadium and will be available for stream on ACC Network Extra. Thursday's game is Pink Day, and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Orange also welcome back former players on Sunday for Alumni Weekend.
