Hoyas Win This Round, 89-79

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the latest chapter of one of college basketball's most storied rivalries, Georgetown (7-3) defeated Syracuse (5-5, 1-1 ACC), 89-79, Saturday afternoon. It was the 95th meeting between the former BIG EAST rivals and the Orange now lead the series 51-44.

After not scoring in the first half, Buddy Boeheim exploded for 25 points in the second. The sophomore finished 7-for-13 from 3-point range and 9-18 from the field.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT
A 6-0 scoring run helped the Hoyas out to an 8-3 lead in the opening minutes of the contest. Elijah Hughes logged the first five points for the Orange, and a Joseph Girard III 3-ball cut the Georgetown lead to 10-8 before the game's first timeout.

Trailing 15-12, Hughes' second 3-pointer of the afternoon knotted the score at 15. Syracuse converted six of its first nine field goals.

The Hoyas regained the lead and stretched it to eight points after an 11-3 run. Girard's second 3-ball brought the Orange back within four with 8:19 remaining in the half, but a technical foul on head coach Jim Boeheim allowed Georgetown to take a 30-23 lead with 7:53 remaining in the half. It was the first technical foul of the season assessed to the Orange. Syracuse responded with an 11-4 scoring run to even the score at 34, thanks to seven consecutive points from Hughes.

A 14-2 Hoya burst to close the half put them on top, 48-36, headed into the locker room. Georgetown's Mac McClung led all players with 21 points in the first 20 minutes and provided nine straight points, including a 3-pointer, during his team's push.

FREE THROWS PROVE COSTLY
Syracuse was 1-for-3 from the free throw strike in the first half, while Georgetown earned 15 points from the line on 19 attempts. The Orange committed 13 personal fouls in the first half compared to six for the Hoyas.

THE HUGHES AND DOLEZAJ SHOW
Hughes and Marek Dolezaj each ended the first half in double figures. Hughes led the way with 18 points, shooting 7-11 from the field and knocking down three shots from beyond the arc. Dolezaj made five of his first six field goals and went to the break with 10 points. Each player had a team-high three assists.

HERE COMES BUDDY
Girard buried two 3-pointers and added a field goal while Boeheim got on the score sheet with a 3-ball to keep the Orange within 10 points in the first six minutes of the second half. Syracuse called timeout with 9:34 to go in regulation, trailing 66-53. Girard and Boeheim each had eight of the 17 second half points for the Orange at this point.
Georgetown guard Jahvon Blair drilled two 3-pointers in 26 seconds to extend his team's advantage to 15 with 7:31 to play in the game. Three Buddy bullseyes from downtown cut the Hoya lead to nine with 3:45 to go. Boeheim was 9-for-13 from the field, 7-for-10 from 3-point range and had 25 points in the second half. Â

Georgetown center Omer Yurtseven's dunk with 2:46 left to play pushed the Hoya lead to 82-68. Syracuse would get within 8 points thanks to two more 3-balls from Boeheim, but Georgetown held on for the 89-79 victory.
