Walsh, Manfredi Named Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week

Shayla Walsh (cheer) and Alex Manfredi (men's rowing) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week.

Walsh, a sophomore from Shrewsbury, Mass., is majoring in inclusive elementary and special education in the School of Education. She has spent time in a classroom setting in the Syracuse City School District in all three semesters enrolled at the university. Walsh is also a peer advisor in the School of Education and was on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in both of her freshman semesters.

A member of the Orange cheerleading team, Walsh has attended the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National Competition in Florida twice.

Manfredi, a senior and native of Vienna, VA., is a marketing management major in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. He is also working towards a minor in public communications studies in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Manfredi has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in all six of his semesters and on the ACC Academic Honor Roll in each of his first three years. Â

A coxswain for the Orange for the entirety of his career, Manfredi has coxed the 1V, 2V and 3V, leading the 2V to victory over Wisconsin and the 1V to wins over Cornell and Navy during his junior season.

Manfredi and the Orange oarsmen are set to return to the water in the spring. Fans can catch the Syracuse cheerleading squad at all men's and women's basketball home games and various Olympic sport contests.
