SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The No. 25th-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team put the finishing touches on a undefeated weekend Sunday, holding off Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Notre Dame, 4-3, to improve to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.Â
The victory, which is Syracuse's fourth in a row, marks the first time in program history that the Orange have won at Notre Dame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse won the doubles point and opened an early 1-0 advantage. After the Irish's Zoe Spence and Brooke Broda dispatched the Orange's No. 2 doubles duo of senior Maria Tritou and sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya, 6-0, Syracuse's remaining doubles pairs picked up the slack.
Senior Dina Hegab and junior Guzal Yusupova, playing at the No. 3 position, won 6-2 before the Orange's No. 1 pair of senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez clinched the point with a 6-3 victory against Notre Dame's top pair Cameron Corse and Bess Waldram.
Syracuse stayed hot in singles play. Golubovskaya defeated her opponent in straight-sets - 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) - on court three, and Knutson, the No. 42-ranked singles player in the country, followed suit, winning in straight sets - 7-5, 6-1, on court one.Â
Up 3-0, the Orange appeared to be in the driver's seat. Notre Dame, however, had other plans.
The Irish rallied off three consecutive wins, earning points from victories on courts five, two and four. Notre Dame, seemingly on the verge of defeat moments prior, had the dual even at 3-3.
Ultimately, it came down to senior Dina Hegab, and she delivered for the Orange. She outlasted the Irish's Zoe Taylor -Â 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3 - on court six and clinched the dual victory for Syracuse.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse next travels to Georgia Tech for a road match against an ACC opponent Friday, March 3 before finishing this stretch at FAU Sunday, March 5.
