Mellen And Curry Tabbed to Tewaaraton Watch List
2/28/2019 8:56:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Sophomore midfielder Brendan Curry and redshirt-junior defender Nick Mellen were 2-of-50 players named to the first Tewaaraton Watch list of the season.
Presented annually to the nation's top-player, an Orange player has won the award three times, which was first presented in 2001. Mike Powell won it in 2002 and 2004, while Mike Leveille captured it in 2008.
Curry leads the Orange in points through three games this season with 10, including six goals and four assists. A Lutherville, Md. native, Curry recorded 17 points with ten goals and seven assists last year, appearing in all 15 games for 'Cuse as a freshman and is already well on pace to shatter those numbers for a season ago.
Mellen is named to the watch list for the second-straight year after missing all of 2017 due to injury. A local product of Syracuse, N.Y., Mellen was named to the All-ACC team in 2018 as a sophomore, leading the team with 22 caused turnovers and recording 31 ground balls.
In the Orange's two wins this season, Mellen has stepped up big defensively. He held Albany's Jakob Patterson, who scored 42 goals in 2018 and has five goals already in 2019, scoreless. Last Sunday, Mellen matched up with Army's Brendan Nichtern, who had scored seven goals in his previous two games, and limited him to just one.

Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 21 and April 4. On April 25, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 9 and invited to the 19th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 30.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Watch list additions can be made throughout the season.
Curry and Mellen return to action on Saturday for a showdown with Virginia in the ACC Opener. Faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. in the Carrier Dome on ESPNU.
