MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Syracuse women's hockey team's push for a first-place finish hit a wall Friday night, as the Orange lost 5-0 to conference leader Robert Morris in the penultimate game of the regular season.Â
Syracuse is now 10-20-3 overall and 10-7-2 in College Hockey America play. The Orange are in third place in the conference standings, now sitting five points behind the Colonials and two points behind second-place Mercyhurst with one game left to play in the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials wasted no time building a lead.
Robert Morris' Amber Rennie scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a power-play opportunity four minutes into the first period. Anjelica Diffendal extended the Colonials' first-period advantage to two at the 14:00 mark.
Two second-period goals, including one by Jaycee Gebhard, the conference's leading scorer, and one third-period tally by Robert Morris put the game out of reach.Â
Syracuse had no issue generating shots on goal throughout the night, matching Robert Morris in shots on net (25). The Orange, however, could not find twine.
OF NOTE
Sophomore defenseman Jessica DiGirolamo had a team-high six shots on goal. Sophomore forward Emma Polaski, the Orange's leading scorer, had three shots on net.
Junior goaltender Ady Cohen started between the pipes and made 16 saves. She was replaced by senior goaltender Maddi Welch in the final period.
UP NEXT
The regular-season finale between Syracuse and Robert Morris begins at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Then, the Orange head to Buffalo, N.Y., for the CHA Tournament. The postseason begins March 6 at the Harborcenter.
