
'Cuse Opens ACC Play Against Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Syracuse softball team is set to open their Atlantic Coast Conference slate with a three-game series against Louisville. The Orange will open the weekend with a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday before returning against the Cardinals at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The final game of the series will be played Sunday at 12 p.m. All three games are set to be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
 
Syracuse (8-14, 0-0 ACC) enters the weekend following a 3-2 outing at the Colorado State Classic. The Orange saw its offense come together, batting .364 as a team. Neli Casares-Maher and Toni Martin led 'Cuse, both hitting above .500. Casares-Maher was 7-of-12 with five RBIs that included three doubles and a team-best seven runs scored. Martin slugged a team-best 1.545 in a 6-of-11 performance at the plate. The junior knocked in two home runs in addition to her three doubles.
 
Alexa Romero (4-3) picked up two wins on the weekend, including a complete five-inning game against Wagner where she struck out nine. Romero returned to the circle to throw five innings against Dayton, retiring nine of the first 10 batters with strikeouts.
 
The Orange, who rank second in the ACC in double plays per game, turned an impressive five against their opponents in Fort Collins.
 
Louisville (17-7, 0-0 ACC) is coming off a midweek sweep in a doubleheader against Morehead State, winning 8-0 and 21-1. The Cardinals have won 11 of its last 12 games and is 6-0 at home. Louisville is led at the plate by junior Celene Funke who is batting .393 with 23 runs scored and six triples. The pitching staff has been led by sophomore Danielle Watson who has 60 strikeouts in 58.1 innings.
 
Both the Louisville and 'Cuse programs are in their 20th seasons, led by a pair of first-year head coaches in Shannon Doepking and the Cardinals Holly Aprile. Louisville leads the all-time series 22-10.
 
Following this weekend, 'Cuse continues conference-action with a three-game series against Boston College March 22-24.
