LOUISVILLE, KY. – In a close game through the first five innings, an RBI double for Louisville (18-7, 1-0 ACC) in the bottom of the sixth proved to be enough for the Cardinals to take the 4-2 victory over Syracuse (8-15) Friday afternoon.
With Syracuse leading 2-1, Louisville opened the bottom of the sixth with a double before a bunt single and walk loaded the bases. A three-RBI single from Sidney Melton put the Cardinals ahead 4-2. 'Cuse headed to the top of the seventh inning, looking for offensive production. Alicia Hansen knocked a double to left field but the final two batters were unable to bring her across the plate to keep the game alive.
The Orange picked up five hits from five different batters including a lead off single in the first inning by Gabby Teran. Teran scored two batters later on a hard hit ball, ruled an error, down the left field line. Following a scoreless two innings, Louisville tied the ball game on back-to-back hits to open the fifth.
Following a lead off out in the sixth inning, Hannah Dossett drew the only walk of the day for 'Cuse. A single by Acevedo advanced Dossett to third. Dossett scored on Louisville's fourth error of the game, putting the Orange back ahead 2-1.
Alexa Romero (4-4) pitched the complete game in the circle for Syracuse, including four scoreless innings. She allowed four runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. It was a pitchers' matchup as Louisville's Danielle Watson also went the full seven innings, allowed two runs on five hits.
Syracuse continues the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game tomorrow.
