Orange NFL Hopefuls Shine at Pro Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. The Syracuse football team hosted its annual Pro Day Monday afternoon inside the Iocolano-Petty Football Complex Weight Room and Ensley Athletic Center. Thirteen players, including 12 from last year's squad, worked out and ran through position drills in front of scouts and executives from 26 of the NFL's 32 teams.
Highlights from the day included tight end Ravian Pierce's 24 reps on bench press and linebacker Ryan Guthrie's broad jump of 123 inches (10'3"). Cody Conway, the Orange's starting left tackle for the past three seasons, impressed in the 3-cone drill. His time of 7.27 seconds would have ranked first among all offensive lineman at this year's NFL Combine. Pierce's performance on the bench press would have tied West Virginia's Trevon Wesco for the most reps by a tight end at the Combine. Guthrie recorded Syracuse's top result in five of Monday's seven tests.
Quarterback Eric Dungey, who clocked a 7.02 in the 3-cone drill, had several marks that would have ranked among the best for players at his position in this year's Combine. Dungey's 3-cone time would have ranked third among quarterbacks. His 40-yard dash time (4.68), as well as his vertical leap of 31.5 inches, would have been in the top 10. He also went through a scripted, 48-pass throwing session that included short, intermediate and deep routes.
"It was a lot of fun," Dungey said. "Ten weeks of training and it paid off. It was good to be back out here throwing to the guys - Jamal [Custis], Ravian, Dontae [Strickland]. It was fun and we'll see where the process takes me."
Despite a college career that saw him amass 11,333 total yards and 93 touchdowns responsible for, Dungey was not invited to the NFL's week-long scouting showcase in Indianapolis. Dungey said he used that disappointment as fuel for his training.
"I think I could've gone there and done really well," Dungey said. "I just want to compete. I want to go against the best and I think my competitive nature brings out the best in me.
"I was disappointed that I wasn't invited, but I'll just use that as motivation. I have this workout now. I'll hopefully have some more workouts after this and we'll see where it takes me."
Defensive tackle Chris Slayton and wideout Jamal Custis, both of whom attended the Combine, also tested Monday. Custis said the evaluations he's received throughout the predraft process have been positive.Â
"I think I got good feedback [at the Combine]," Custis said. "A lot of guys predicted me to run slower than I ran, so I think I did pretty well in that. I tested well in the broad jump and vertical there, too."
Syracuse's NFL hopefuls will now spend the next few weeks working out privately and interviewing with teams leading up to the draft, which runs from April 25-27 in Nashville, Tenn.
