
'Cuse Set for Midweek Matchup Against Canisius

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Coming off a 4-1 record last week, Syracuse (14-19) is set for a midweek matchup against Canisius (4-20) on Wednesday, April 3. The Orange will travel down the road to Buffalo for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
The Orange are coming off a crucial series win over Notre Dame, the first for Syracuse since 2016. 'Cuse opened the series with a dominant 9-1, six-inning victory that included a walk-off triple by Lailoni Mayfield. After Notre Dame narrowly won game two, 8-6, Syracuse clinched the series with an 8-6 victory that closed out the weekend. The Orange also took two games last week against Niagara in a midweek doubleheader.
Mayfield exploded offensively for the Orange, going 9-of-13 for a .692 batting average across the five games. The sophomore recorded seven RBIs, five runs scored, a double, triple and home run including four walks. In the final game of the series against Notre Dame, she became the first Syracuse player since 2016 to hit a grand slam, recording her first career home run. She ended the week with a 1.154 slugging percentage and .684 on-base percentage. Alicia Hansen contributed seven hits, seven runs scored and nine RBIs.
Alexa Romero led the charge for Syracuse in the circle, tossing over 20 innings, which included 15 against Notre Dame. Romero went 3-0 with one save in five appearances. The lefty eclipsed 500 career strikeouts against Niagara, becoming the third Syracuse player all-time to do so.
Canisius had its first run-rule victory of the season Sunday after defeating Rider, 9-1, in five-innings. Erin Hufford leads the Golden Griffins with a .406 batting average which includes 28 hits in 22 games. Sophomore Emily Nicosia has taken a large portion of the load in the circle, with 62.2 innings pitched. Nicosia is 15-10 on the season with a 4.02 ERA and 33 strikeouts. Kara Paradowski's speed on the base paths rank her fourth in the country, averaging one stolen base per game.
Syracuse returns to ACC action this weekend with a series against NC State. 'Cuse travels to Raleigh to face an NC State team that went 3-1 last weekend, including a series win against Boston College. The three-game series begins Friday, April 5. All three games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
