Orange Defeat Canisius, 9-6
4/3/2019 8:10:00 PM | Softball
Six 'Cuse players recorded multiple hits, including another three-hit performance by Lailoni Mayfield. Mayfield went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs. The sophomore has recorded multiple hits in five of the last six games and extended an eight game on-base streak.
A three-run second inning was what set the tone early for the Orange as they scored three runs on three hits for the 3-0 lead. Alex Acevedo and Mayfield led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Kaiser drew the only 'Cuse walk of the day to load the bases. Gianna Carideo knocked in two runs with an RBI single to center field before Kaiser scored on a wild pitch.
A two-run third inning brought Canisius within one, 3-2, before the Orange controlled the next four frames. Syracuse moved out to a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth following a two-RBI single from Mayfield. One more run came in the sixth after a Bryce Holmgren sac fly that scored Gabby Teran from third.
The Orange's three-run seventh inning would prove to be crucial as Canisius mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the frame. Mayfield raked a double to score the first run of the inning before a dropped third strike allowed Carideo to reach base and advanced Mayfield to third. A triple from Teran cleared the base paths and left the Orange with a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Canisius put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh in an attempt to prolong the game. After loading the bases, the Golden Griffins hit three-straight singles that scored three runs. Alexa Romero entered the game, striking out the first batter she faced. Canisius drew a walk that loaded the bases for the second time in the inning but Romero ended the threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
'Cuse pitched by committee through the full seven innings, led by starter Miranda Hearn who earned her first win of the season. Hearn (1-5) went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a career-high tying six strikeouts. Peyton Schnackenberg had a shutout two innings of relief before Logan Paul saw action in the seventh. Romero closed out the game with three seventh inning strikeouts to earn her second save of the season.
OF NOTE
Syracuse is undefeated this season when recording nine or more hits.
Romero's three strikeouts in the seventh inning helped her surpass 100 this season. The lefty now has 521 in her career, which ranks third all-time at 'Cuse.
