SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Track & field's Mary Malone and men's lacrosse's Nick Martin are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
Malone, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is studying public relations in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She has yet to compete during the outdoor season, but she concluded her indoor season with a new personal record in the 3000m at the David Hemrey Invitational with a time of 9:41.26.
Martin, a redshirt junior hailing from Birmingham, Michigan, is a finance and real estate major in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. He has seen action in seven of the Orange's 12 games, appearing as a defensive midfielder on the man-down unit and as a faceoff specialist. Martin scooped up one ground ball and won his only faceoff attempt in Syracuse's 9-8 victory over then-No. 2 Duke earlier in the season.
Malone and the rest of the track & field team are gearing up for a split-squad weekend. Syracuse competitors will be at the Tom Jones Invitational from Friday, April 26, to Saturday, April 27, in Gainesville, Florida, and at the Big Red Invitational Sunday, April 28, in Ithaca, New York.
Martin and the men's lacrosse team, meanwhile, begin play at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship later this week. The Orange take on North Carolina at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
