Four unanswered goals in the game's final-four minutes powered No. 5 seed North Carolina (8-6) past No. 4 seed Syracuse (9-4) in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Saturday, with 'Cuse falling 11-10.
In a back-and-forth battle, the Orange managed seemingly took over command of the game in the fourth quarter, going up 10-7 with just over seven minutes to play, but Carolina stormed back late and 'Cuse was unable to get a good look as time expired.
"I thought Carolina played really well tonight. They were a team that had to win and they showed it," said Head Coach John Desko. "We had a lot of turnovers in the first half and I thought we worked our way through it, then when we finally got the three-goal lead I think we felt too comfortable too early."
Bradley Voigt (4-1) led the way with five points and Jacob Buttermore also registered a hat trick and an assist. Drake Porter made 12 saves in the loss. Tyson Bomberry was stellar on the ground as well, tying a career-high with eight ground balls, while Nick Mellen caused three turnovers. Bomberry and Dearth each caused a pair as well.
Brendan Curry, Jamie Trimboli and Nate Solomon also found the back of the net in the loss.
Next, 'Cuse will await their NCAA Tournament matchup on Selection Sunday. The Orange were the No. 6 seed in the most recent NCAA committee release. The tournament field will be announced on Sunday, May 5.
