NASHVILLE – Syracuse defensive tackle Chris Slayton was selected with the 31st pick in the seventh round (No. 245 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft by the New York Giants on Saturday, April 27.
Slayton is the sixth Orange defensive lineman drafted since 2006 and the first since Jay Bromley in 2014. Of Syracuse's eight draft picks since 2013, four have been selected by the Giants (OL Justin Pugh - 2013, QB Ryan Nassib - 2013, Bromley - 2014, Slayton - 2019).
Â
A 2018 All-ACC Honorable Mention choice, Slayton served as Syracuse's defensive team captain as a senior last season. He made 24 tackles, including eight for a loss, and had 3.5 sacks to aid an Orange defense that tied for third nationally in takeaways (31) and set a program record with 43 sacks.
Slayton tallied 107 tackles in 49 games (41 starts) for the Orange from 2015-18. He ranks ninth in team history with 32.5 tackles for loss. Additionally, he recorded 9.5 career sacks, five fumbles, three pass breakups, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.
Â
With Slayton's selection, the Orange have now had at least one player drafted in 41 of the last 44 years dating back to 1976.
