SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Miranda Hearn pitched the first seven inning complete game of her career Wednesday afternoon as Syracuse defeated Cornell, 3-0.
Hearn (3-6) went the full seven-shutout innings for the Orange allowing only three hits and three walks with a career-high eight strikeouts. Syracuse (21-28) was led offensively by Alexis Kaiser who recorded her seventh home run of the year with a solo shot in the first inning.
"I'm really confident with Miranda," said head coach Shannon Doepking. "I'm super proud of her. For her to stick with this and grind it out for the team, I think shows a lot about what Miranda is about. I think we've always known she has talent, it was just time before it all came together for her."
Kaiser's home run was the first hit of the day for the Orange before Cornell (10-33) held them to only two hits over the next four innings. Syracuse added an additional two runs in the sixth inning following a leadoff walk by Neli Casares-Maher. Toni Martin entered the game as a pinch runner, before scoring from first on an RBI double from Hannah Dossett. Dossett advance to third on a throw home, setting up a sacrifice fly opportunity for Lailoni Mayfield.
Cornell's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the third where the Big Red loaded the bases. With two outs, Miranda Lawson doubled to left field before a walk and single gave them a prime scoring opportunity. Hearn continued her steady performance in the circle, striking out the sixth batter of the game to end the inning.
