PHOENIX – After attending Arizona Cardinals rookie minicamp as a tryout player, former Syracuse running back Dontae Strickland signed a free-agent contract with the club on Sunday, May 12.
Â
The Cardinals brought 28 tryout players to Phoenix for three days of practice and signed two: Strickland and Wheaton College safety Tyler Sigler.
Â
Strickland rushed for 1,717 yards and 15 touchdowns in 47 career games for the Orange. He was also a receiving threat out of the backfield, catching 63 passes in his four seasons, the third-most in team history for a player at his position.
Â
The 2018 recipient of the program's Ray Martino Award for loyalty, enthusiasm and perseverance, Strickland earned his undergraduate degree in human development and family science from the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. He skipped the University's graduation ceremonies this past weekend to attend the minicamp.
Â
Strickland is the fifth Syracuse player off the 2018 team to agree to contract terms as an undrafted free agent, joining quarterback Eric Dungey (New York Giants), wide receiver Jamal Custis (Kansas City Chiefs) and offensive tackles Koda Martin (Los Angeles Chargers) and Cody Conway (Tennessee Titans).
Â
In addition, defensive tackle Chris Slayton was drafted with the 31st pick in the seventh round (No. 245 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Dating back to 1976, the Orange have had at least one player drafted in 41 of the past 44 years.
