Senior Iliass Aouani won a pair of ACC titles, set the conference record for the 10k and concluded his year by qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He can now add another honor to his list after he was named ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Majoring in civil engineering, Aouani headlines the All-ACC Academic Team, where he's joined by teammates and fellow NCAA qualifiers Paige Stoner and Laura Dickinson.
To be honored, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA and also be above a 3.0 for the most recent semester. Athletic achievements are also used to determine the All-ACC Academic team. In this year's case, every honoree was either an All-ACC selection or an NCAA Championship qualifier.
Â
Aouani joins a long list of Syracuse student-athletes to be honored for academic and athletic success by the conference. Stoner has previously won the award twice, as has former standout Martin Hehir. 'Cuse has won five ACC scholar-athlete of the year honors in cross country and track in their six seasons in the league.
A Milan, Italy native, Aouani began his spring by smashing the Syracuse and ACC record in the 10,000-meters with a mark of 28:25.36. He then won conference titles in both the 5 and 10k – the first two individual conference championships of his career. Following a successful prelims, he finished 20th at the NCAA Championship in the 10000-meters.
Stoner concluded her career this spring as the most decorated woman in program history and graduated with a degree in education and psychology. The Pottsville, Pennsylvania native won her fourth and fifth conference titles on the track this spring, was a First Team All-American and posted a top-six time nationally in three different events. She kicked off her season with the 12th-fastest time in NCAA history (32:07.36) in the 10k before posting the No. 6 time nationally in the steeplechase and setting the school record in the 5k (15:28.47) in the regular season. Stoner won the steeplechase and 5k at the ACC Championships and finished seventh in the 10k at the NCAA Championships.
Dickinson was a two-time All-ACC honoree and a Second Team All-America honoree this year. The psychology major was the ACC runner-up to Stoner in the 3000-meter steeplechase and also took fourth in the 5k. She then qualified for her first NCAA Championship event, taking 15th in the 10000-meter run to earn her first All-America selection.
